At what age is a kitten ready for adoption?
They are generally ready for a new home after 4 months (16 weeks). Experts say that kittens should not leave their mother before they are 12 weeks old. Anything younger may permanently harm the kitten's physical and mental health. Also, kittens do not receive all the mothers’ antibodies and their immune system are not fully developed until they are 12 weeks of age. In addition, it is recommended by Vaccine Manufacturers that the kittens be vaccinated between 8 weeks and 16 weeks of age. At 16 weeks, it is also safe to spay or neuter the kittens. We keep them at least 16 weeks to make sure they are completely healthy, fully independent, and able to handle the stress of moving to their new homes.

What Vaccines do you give the kittens?
We give an Intranasal vaccine containing modified live Calici and Rhinotracheitis at 2 - 3 weeks of age.
At 8 weeks we start a series of 3 vaccines of modified live Rhinotracheitis, Calici, and Panleukopenia. (These viruses are airborne.) Kittens receive 3 cycles of this vaccine, ending approximately by 16 weeks of age.
We Do Not vaccinate our kittens against Leukemia, or Rabies because these vaccines, in rare cases, have been associated with cancerous tumors. Also, these viruses are contracted only through intimated contact with carriers of the viruses. Since our cattery is "leukemia free", an indoor pet would not be exposed to these viruses.

Are your Tonkinese outdoor cats?
THEY ARE NOT! This would endanger the cat's life. In addition, it is also part of our contractual agreement that the kittens are to be "indoor cats" ONLY!

What is the position of Karessence on declawing cats?
We are completely opposed to declawing. It is also part of our contractual agreement that the kittens/cats "not be declawed". We feel this is inhumane because it is a very painful procedure and the cat loses its primary defense mechanism. If the cat's nails are trimmed regularly, and the cat is taught to use a scratching post, then there is no need for declawing the animal.

What are the prices of the cats?
Prices vary depending on the age of the pet available. Please contact us for further information on the availability and pricing of the cats.

Is a Male or Female better as a pet?
Both sexes make wonderful pets. Generally speaking, there are minor differences in character and size depending on the sex of the cat. Usually Neutered males are more laid back, and tend to be followers despite their larger size, while spayed females have stronger personalities and tend to be leaders, even though they are smaller. These differences are only evident when you have pets of both sexes in the household, and may not always be the case. We feel it is better to choose a cat based on its personality, instead of color and sex.

What are the colors and patterns of the cats?
There are many patterns and colors in the Tonkinese breed, for more information please refer to our Tonks section of this site, where you can find pictures and other information regarding our breed.

Do you ship the cats to their new homes?
No, we only accept buyers that are willing to come and pick up their new pets. Shipping is a very stressful and an unnecessary experience for the cats.

What is a cat's age in relation to human years?

Cat's Age Chart

It was once generally thought that one year in the life of the cat was equivalent to seven years of a human life. A new scale of equivalents is now recognized: after the first two years, the cat's life proceeds more slowly in relation to human life and each feline year is approximately four human years.
Use this chart to determine your cat's age in relation to a human's.
